ROUTE TRIP: Day 2

Although total mileage was higher today, we made it into Houlton, ME in just over 8 hours, aided by the 75mph speed limit in Maine.  Our apologies to the Creeping Corridor of yesterday;  congestion is not I-95’s fault.  Today we had a lovely drive with no delays on I-295, I-395, and I-495.  Interstates really can do what they’re supposed to do.  Our reservations were waiting again;  another good sign.  And, best of all, tomorrow we begin Route 2 – Wednesday (Hump Day according to GEICO), so it should be all downhill from there.  Wait, . . . what?!

We determined on this trip to see more of America, not just its beauty and history as we have observed on past adventures, but its people. Today we shared stories with a gentleman from India, who worked for our government, managed several Subways, and now owns and operates a small motel with his extended family.

While we were there, the motel was crowded with construction workers and their trucks, and Mr. Patel was explaining that they were good people, who would respect our presence and privacy. He then began telling us about a renowned and respected construction engineer, who had perfected underwater repairs for water towers. When the man died, people flooded into tiny Branford, CT from as far away as Maine for his memorial service.

“In America, ingenuity of all people is wonderful and appreciated,” he continued. “More than any country, no matter what color or culture, opportunities are limitless. As an immigrant, I recognize this.” He smiled and glowed, wished us well, and went about his daily chores.
