St. Ignace, Michigan
Back in the Upper Peninsula and seeing three Great Lakes again – Michigan from Mackinaw City, Superior from Whitefish Point, and Huron from St. Ignace. Whitefish Point’s lighthouse is still in use, but the light, fog signal, and radio beacon have been automated and are now controlled from Sault Ste. Marie.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park was a delight. The land of Longfellow’s Hiawatha – “by the rushing Tahquamenaw” – encompasses 50,000 acres of undeveloped woodland and one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. People were smiling at each other, looking you in the eye, admiring each other’s kids and dogs, and having a great time conversing along the trails – yep, no cell phone reception (yay!).

We have observed that much of the UP small-retail economy runs on the honor system.

In our journeying, we passed yet another PB&BBO (Paul Bunyon and Babe the Blue Ox), a church sign that read “Is Prayer Your Steering Wheel or Your Spare Tire?”, and a reminder that we were indeed in the Upper Peninsula.
